Naruto is an anime (a Japanese cartoon), created by TV Tokyo. This studio has made other anime as well. The anime is based on manga, the Japanese version of a comic book. The series is still being written, but nobody knows when it will end.
The series is about the life of a young shinobi, a ninja, named Naruto. Before Naruto was born, a fox-demon named Kyuubi appeared. This demon killed a lot of shinobi, he nearly destroyed the village of Konoha. The leader of the village, the Fourth Hokage, "sealed" the demon in new born Naruto. The adults who survived the disaster don't want to have anything to do with Naruto, because he has the Kyuubi inside him. They pass their hatred on to their children. Because of this, and the fact he's an orphan, Naruto has led a lonely childhood. He's not a good shinobi, he's not even a good student, so to be acknowledged, he does pranks. After failing numberous of exams, he finally passes and gets out of the academy. He gets 2 teammates, Sakura and Sasuke. They don't like Naruto at first, but they grow to respect him.
Naruto has a dream in life, becoming Hokage and making everyone acknowledge him. He does everything for obtaining his goal, his dream is wat got him through his rough childhood.
In the world of shinobi, there are 3 different styles of fighting: Taijutsu (hand-to-hand), Ninjutsu (Ninja-techniques) and Genjutsu (Ilusionary-techniques). To use Nunjutsu and Genjutsu you need chakra, a form of energy obtained by converting stamina, your lifepower. The amount of chakra you have is a deciding factor for which techniques (jutsu) you can perform. For particular jutsu little chakra is required, for other jutsu you need more. These jutsu can vary of replicating yourself, or spitting fire to calling forth a gigantic beast. This is not the case with Taijutsu. You still need chakra, but the most important power is stamina. A part of Taijutsu is handling weapons, like shuriken (stars you throw at your opponent) or kunai (knives to throw).
